Sergeant Major Headquarters Battalion
Sergeant Major John E. Bankus
Sergeant Major John E. Bankus is currently assigned as Sergeant Major for Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division.

Sergeant Major Bankus is a native of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in October 1992 and underwent recruit training at 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. and was promoted to Private First Class by contract upon graduation.

In July 1993 he graduated the M1A1 Basic Crewman Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was then ordered to Company B, 2d Tank Battalion, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

In September of 1996, he reported for duty to Marine Corps Security Force Training Company, Chesapeake Virginia for school. Upon graduation Sergeant Bankus was assigned to MCSFCO Kings Bay, Georgia.

In June 1999, He was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and ordered to report to 2d Tank Battalion Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Staff Sergeant Bankus was assigned to Bravo Company. He went to Master Gunner School in 2001 and became the company Master Gunner upon his return. Staff Sergeant Bankus was selected for promotion to Gunnery Sergeant in June of 2002. In January 2003 he deployed in support of OIF.

Gunnery Sergeant Bankus returned to Camp Lejeune and received orders to 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division at 29 Palms, California.

Gunnery Sergeant Bankus arrived in November of 2003 and was assigned to Charlie Company as a Platoon Sergeant. In March of 2004, Gunnery Sergeant Bankus deployed in support of OIF II. Upon his return in October 2004 he was assigned as the Company Gunnery Sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company.

In December 2006 Gunnery Sergeant Bankus was promoted and given orders to report to 2d Marine Logistics Group, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. First Sergeant Bankus was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 8 as the Company First Sergeant of Truck Company. In August of 2007 First Sergeant Bankus deployed in support of OIF. On 23 April 2008, First Sergeant Bankus was reassigned to deploy in support of OEF with Combat Logistics Battalion 24, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit as their Battalion Sergeant Major.

First Sergeant Bankus was posted as the CLB 26 SgtMaj in June of 2009. In April of 2010, First Sergeant Bankus received orders to Headquarters and Support Battalion, MCB Camp Lejeune and assigned to Alpha Company as the Company First Sergeant. In August 2011, First Sergeant Bankus was promoted to his current rank and given orders to 8th Engineer Support Battalion.

Sergeant Major Bankus was posted as the Battalion Sergeant Major for 8th Engineer Support Battalion on 26 September 2011. Sergeant Major Bankus deployed to Afghanistan 12.1 from May until August 2012. On 18 April 2013, Sergeant Major Bankus received orders to report to SOI-W Camp Pendleton for duty as the Headquarters Battalion Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Bankus posted as Sergeant Major for 12th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division on 29 May 2015. On 29 January 2016, Sergeant Major Bankus posted to Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division.
