First Sergeant Jacob L. Karl

First Sergeant Jacob L. Karl enlisted on 23 July 1995 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, California. Upon graduation from recruit training he reported to the School of Infantry (SOI), Camp Pendleton, California where he received the military occupational specialty (MOS) of 0351, Anti-Tank Assualtman.
After graduating SOI, First Sergeant Karl reported to Marine Corps Security Forces Guard School for further training and MOS 8152 Security Guard. Upon completion of school, he was placed on the Personal Reliability Program and assigned to Marine Corps Security Force Company, North Island, California where he served as Guard Stander and Close Quarters Battle Team Member.
In May 1998, First Sergeant Karl was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines where he served as an Assualtman, Team Leader and Squad Leader. He deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/4 with the 31st MEU (SOC) III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, participating in Operation Sudden Storm, Operation Contingency, and Operation Southern Watch.
In June 1999, First Sergeant conducted a lateral move to MOS 1142 Electrical Equipment Repair Specialist (EERS). While awaiting school he was given Temporary Additional Orders (TAD) to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Utilities Platoon where he served as the Platoon Sergeant and received on the job training prior to attending MOS school.
First Sergeant Karl reported to Marine Corps Engineer School where he graduated as the Honor Grad for EERS class 00-05 and received orders Company A, Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38, Marine Air Control Group 38, and 3RD Marine Air Wing assuming duties as the Platoon Sergeant and Electrical Section Quality Control NCO. He also attended the MCMAP Instructors Course, becoming a green belt MCMAP instructor.
In March 2002, First Sergeant Karl received orders to Recruiters School, MCRD, San Diego. Upon completion of Recruiter School, he was assigned to Recruiting Station Portland, OR, Permanent Contact Station Pendleton, OR for 36 Months as a Recruiter and was promoted to Staff Sergeant.
First Sergeant Karl received orders to 1st Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, where he served as the Platoon Sergeant, Electrical Section Floor Chief, and the Maintenance Chief. He went on two deployments to Operation Iraqi Freedom, the first with Combat Logistics Battalion 5 as the Organics Chief, in Camp Fallujah Iraq, and the second as the Logistics OIC with Police Transition Team-20 in Rawah, Iraq.
In March 2009, First Sergeant Karl was transferred to 7TH Engineer Support Battalion where he served as the Maintenance Chief, and deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom where he was named Project Manager Mobile Expeditionary Power (PM-MEP), 2010 Power Professional of the year.
In November 2010, GySgt Karl was transferred to Marine Air Control Squadron 2 for duties as the Utilities Chief. Upon completion of his tour in June 2011, GySgt Karl was transferred to Marine Tactical Air Control Squadron 38 where he served as the Utilities Chief and the S-4 OIC/Chief.
First Sergeant Karl reported to 3rd Maintenance Battalion, Engineer Maintenance Company Okinawa, Japan July 2013, where he served as the Utilities Platoon Commander, and Company First Sergeant. While assigned to Engineer Maintenance Company, he supported Operations Damianyan, exercise Balikatan, and the Proof of Concept equipment mission located in Manila, Philippines. He also attended Utilities Chiefs Course in Jan – Feb 2015 where he was the Honor Graduate.
First Sergeant Karl executed Permanent Change of Assignment orders to Engineer Operations Company, Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 where he served as the Utilities Chief, and Senior Enlisted Advisor. First Sergeant Karl was selected to first Sergeant and executed Permanent Change of Assignment orders to Headquarters Regiment, 3D Marine Logistics Group. He served as the Company First Sergeant for Service Company., and Communications Company.
In November 2017 First Sergeant Karl attended the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy where he graduated with the Honor Graduate Award, and reported to his current billet as the Marine Corps Installations Pacific – Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Headquarters Support Battalion, Company B, First Sergeant.
He is married to Tammy and has three children; daughter Sadie, age 19, son Koby, age 18, and daughter Kaitlyn, age 7.
First Sergeant Karl’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of third award, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with silver and bronze star in lieu of seventh award, and Outstanding Volunteer Service.
