Biography
Camp Director, Camp Hansen
Mr. Joseph Scala

Mr. Joseph (Joe) Scala was born in Portsmouth Virginia, the Son of a retired Senior Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy he grew up on both the east and west coasts of the United States, Turkey and Japan.  In September of 1982 Mr. Scala Joined the U.S Navy and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after 30 years of service, serving in multiple roles to include, Maintenance Management, Administration, Quality Assurance, Facility Management, Construction Management, Host Nation Liaison and Leadership roles over 12 aviation commands located in the U.S., Philippines, Spain and Japan.   His career encompassed 11 deployments on board six Aircraft Carriers and one Replenishment ship, and one deployment to Al Asad Iraq.  Mr. Scala Retired in December 2012 from his last assignment as the Officer in Charge of Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW5) Shore Activities at NAF Atsugi Japan.

While serving as the Maintenance Officer at the EA-18G Fleet Integration Team and at CVW5 Mr. Scala served as part of the Commander Naval Air Forces (CNAF), Defense Policy Review Initiative (DPRI) team and was the direct representative for CVW5 working toward the move of CVW5’s fixed wing assets to MCAS Iwakuni.  During the 2011 Great Eastern Japan earthquake, and tsunami Mr. Scala was responsible for the evacuation and reconstitution of CVW5’s personnel, assets and most importantly their families.

After his retirement Mr. Scala worked as an Area/Regional Manager for aircraft simulations devices, and Senior Training Specialist/Field Engineering for NAVAIRSYCOMS, Material Readiness Team as a Contractor, until joining government service and the Camp Hansen Team.

Mr. Scala’s personal military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (7), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3), National Defense Medal (2), South West Asia Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal Kuwait, and numerous others.

Mr. Scala has a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, University College.
