Biography

Commanding Officer, Headquarters and Support Battalion
Colonel David M. Banning

Colonel Banning is from Ontario, Oregon and graduated from Oregon State University in 1995.

 

He reported to 1st Tank Battalion in 1997 where he served as a Tank Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer.

 

In 1999, 1st Lieutenant Banning reported to Officer Candidate School and served as the Tactics Officer and Communication/Demonstration Platoon Commander. After completion of Amphibious Warfare School, Captain Banning rejoined 1st Tank Battalion in 29 Palms as a Company Commander and deployed for Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003. In 2004, he deployed as a member of the 1st Marine Regiment Operations section for Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 2.

 

In 2004, he reported to Fort Knox, Kentucky and served as the Company Inspector- Instructor for Company E, 4th Tank Battalion and in 2006, attended the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Following completion, Major Banning reported to Nashville, Tennessee and served as the Commanding Officer of Recruiting Station Nashville from 2007-2010.

 

After completion of recruiting duty, Major Banning attended the School of Advanced Warfighting and was assigned to III MEF as the Korea Exercise Plans Officer from 2011- 2012. From 2012-2014,

 

Lieutenant Colonel Banning served as the Battalion Inspector- Instructor for 4th Tank Battalion in Miramar, California and following this tour, as the Plans Officer for 3rd Marine Air Wing before beginning the Japanese Language Course at the Defense Language Institute in 2015.

 

After graduation from DLI, he attended the Japanese National Institute for Defense Studies in Tokyo, Japan. He then served as the Marine Forces Pacific Liaison to the Ground Self Defense Force in the Japanese Ministry of Defense from 2017- 2019. In 2019, Colonel Banning returned to Okinawa and rejoined III MEF as the Current Operations Officer. He commanded Marine Rotational Force-Darwin from January 2020-December 2021, completing two deployments to Australia.
