Sergeant Major West was born on 19 September 1973 in Brazoria, Texas.  He entered the Marine Corps in February 1993 and after graduating boot camp was assigned to the infantry.  Upon completion of Marine Combat Training and Infantry Training Battalion Schools, Private First Class West was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton Californian.  He served as a mortar man and scout swimmer and deployed with the 31st MEU in 1994.  Corporal West then transferred to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Charlie Company where he served as Vehicle Commander, Platoon Sergeant, and Company Gunnery Sergeant.  During this time Sgt West deployed with the 11th MEU in 1998 and 15th MEU in 2000. 

In 2001 Sergeant West volunteered for Drill Instructor duty at San Diego, California.  He served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor with Golf Company Second Recruit Training Battalion.  In 2005 Staff Sergeant West was transferred to 1st Battalion 4th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California.  He served as a Platoon Sergeant with Alpha Company and deployed with the 15th MEU in 2006.  In 2007 Gunnery Sergeant West deployed with Headquarters and Service Company in support of OIF as the Platoon Commander for the Personnel Security Detachment, and assumed the role of Company Gunnery Sergeant after deployment. 

Gunnery Sergeant West volunteered for Marine Combat Instructor duty at Camp Pendleton, California and served as combat instructor for Infantry Unit Leaders Course.  In March of 2009, First Sergeant West was transferred to the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center as the Headquarter Company First Sergeant.  In 2011 First Sergeant West was then transferred to 1st Tank Battalion, Twenty-nine Palms and was assigned to an advisor team and deployed in support of OEF in 2012.  Upon return First Sergeant West was assigned as the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant.

Sergeant Major West held the billet as the 3rd Battalion 11th Marines Sergeant Major from May 2014 to May 2016 and 7th Communication Battalion Sergeant Major from June 2016 to October 2017. Sergeant Major West is currently assigned as the Sergeant Major, III MEF Information Group, 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade and Camp Hansen.

Sergeant Major West’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one Gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one Gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with four Gold stars and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Sergeant Major West graduated with honors from Ashford University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Management.
